Point Hope Maritime (a Ralmax Group Company) has an exciting and immediate opening for a full-time Welder in Victoria, British Columbia. The skilled Welder will cut and join metals and other materials at our facilities or construction sites. You will operate appropriate equipment to put together mechanical structures or parts with a great deal of precision. Your job is important as it provides the foundation for strong infrastructure. A welder must be competent in using potentially
dangerous equipment following all safety precautions. The ideal candidate will also have a steady hand and great attention to detail. Knowledge of different kinds of metal and their properties is essential.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide routine maintenance
  • Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances
  • Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
  • Weld quality must pass visual, magnetic particle, ultrasonic & X-ray inspection methods
  • Safely operate power tools such as angle grinders, band saws, friction saws & belt sanders
  • Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls
  • Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding
  • Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips
  • May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts
  • Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding
  • Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines
  • Other duties within scope of the position, as assigned


Qualifications:


Education and Experience


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
  • Must hold a Journeyman’s certificate, or have Red Seal
  • Competition of college/CEGEP/vocational or technical training
  • Ability to communicate, read, and understand/follow directions in English
  • Willingness to participate in regular training programs and courses


Knowledge and Skills

 

  • W.B Welding Certification
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail

  • Be able to weld in multiple processes (SMAW, FCAW/MCAW, GMAW & GTAW)
  • Be able to perform CAC (Carbon Arc Cutting (gouging))
  • Understand the basic premises of distortion control & weld sequencing.
  • Understand the need / requirement for the pre-heating & post heating of weld joints
  • Understand how to measure and interpret drawing in both standards of measurements (imperial & metric)
  • Ability to understand & interpret weld symbols
  • Good knowledge of hand and power tools
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times


Requirements:

 

  • Must be able to weld in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical & overhead)
  • Must be able to stand, crouch, kneel and/or sit for extended periods of time, able to lift up to 75 lbs, climb ladders and work from elevation, and walk on varied terrain
  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks
  • Ability to work within confined spaces
  • Possess manual dexterity
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus


Work Conditions

 

  • Travel to off-site locations may be required
  • Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
  • Overtime as required
  • Hazards associated with the trade
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
